DIDYMO: A horrible algae, which damages the rivers and their lives, not control

What is Didymo?

The Didymo, also known as "Rock Snot"is a freshwater microalga European origin.

It is harmless to humans, but can multiply in massive blooms, changing the ecosystems of rivers, lakes and other fresh water courses, reducing fish populations and other aquatic species, and thus affecting the economic and tourist activities in the area.

Their presence in Chile was confirmed in the Lakes Region. Sernapesca Surveillance Zone declared the Futaleufu River Basin, which includes, among other measures, movement restrictions for recreational fishing gear, cleaning boats, kayaks, rafts. Moreover, Sernapesca has launched an intensive media campaign and community education, distributing posters and brochures in the municipalities, clubs and fishing lodges, and other organizations involved in rivers and lakes of the southern.

How to avoid: REMOVE, WASH AND DRY

The Didymo spreads very easily from one place to another mainly by the action man, inadvertently carrying it in her shoes, clothes, fishing gear or vehicles. This makes it necessary to take special measures to prevent its spread, so the National Marine Fisheries Service asked the public, especially residents and visitors to the areas surrounding rivers and lakes in southern Chile, to take the following precautions:

  • If entering a river or lake, check and remove any visible presence of algae of shoes, clothes, fishing gear and vehicles before they leave the site and if possible, throw it away.
  • Always travel with a cleaning kit consisting of a large bucket , biodegradable detergent, disinfectant (eg household bleach), a brush and disposable bags. Avoid wearing felt boots and shoes or clothing made of absorbent material.
  • After use, soak your fishing implements (clothing and gear) from 1 to 2 minutes in a bucket with 10 liters of water and one cup of household bleach. Do not return to the river water that served to wash.
  • Vehicles and boats that came in contact with water must be cleaned with a disinfectant solution. Also clean the tires and the bottom of your vehicle, if you come in contact with water.
  • The dry conditions kill Didymo, but it can survive for months in moist environments. Avoid using your gear dry waiting until at least 48 hours before reuse.
